Information on the cattail pulls and what is the goal?
Direction and advice is continually given by MCP and DNR on technique and areas designated for removal.
Goal VS Vision
Goal: Specific tangible target to achieve vision. Strategy and tactics. (ie. % reduced, deadlines, feet restored).
Vision: Is the why of what we are doing. Gives direction. What is desired for the future.
2016 pilot (phase 1): 15 volunteers for 3 hours 40 linear feet; 12 cubic yard dumpster
2017 pilot (phase 2): 15-20 volunteers for 2 hours; 12+ cubic yard dumpster composted material
Goals (approved by MCP):
- Demonstrate that HPF has the ability to manually remove unwanted vegetation.
- To reduce the population of native cattails.
- Eliminate the non-native cattail species.
- Establish native plant community.
Vision: To eliminate nonnative species that can sustain wildlife; creating a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Increase accessibility and maintain view-shed of and surrounding the lagoon.
- Next steps for cattail project
3rd Annual Cattail Removal will be held in fall of 2018. Shoreline restoration will be incorporated into pilot project per MCPD recommendation. The committee will be seeking environmental contractors to consult with about restoration ideas as REQUIRED by parks in spring of 2018. Shoreline restoration will include native seeding and planting to address potential shoreline erosion. There will be opportunity for community input and review of draft plans submitted by contractors.
